Position Summary: The role of the Spiritual Counselor is to ensure that each patient and/or family have spiritual care counseling services, as desired. The Spiritual Counselor develops and implements the spiritual aspects of hospice care, participates in the hospice team, and arranges the provision of spiritual and emotional care to patients, families and staff members. All individuals with diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. 

Qualifications:                                   

  • Graduate of an accredited Seminary or School of Theology (M. DIV or equivalent Theological degree)
  • 4 units of CPE (required, no exceptions)
  • Ecclesiastical endorsement
  • Board certification or working towards it (required)
  • Experience working with death and dying, individuals/family/caregivers
  • Knowledge and commitment to hospice philosophy of care
  • Ability to communicate effectively publicly, one-on-one, written and by phone
  • Ability to provide non-judgmental listening presence
  • Ability to find creative ways to engage people with Alzheimer’s and cognitive decline
  • Ability to accept different lifestyles, cultures, beliefs and values
  • Ability to network with community clergy and congregations

Duties:

  • Ensure that each patient and/or family have spiritual care counseling services, as desired.
    • Attend Starts of Care
    • Develop and implement Care Plan to include spiritual aspects of hospice care
    • Participate in and with the hospice team for each patient assigned to them
    • Arrange for the provision of spiritual and emotional care to patients and families
    • Provide leadership and officiating of funerals when asked by families
    • Attend funerals when available and important to do so
  • Actively participates with Chaplain team to provide care for all patients, families and Staff
    • Maintain communication with Supervisor and other Chaplains for continuity of care
    • Attend regularly scheduled Chaplain meetings and all staff meetings/gatherings/Memorials
    • Remain flexible and available to step in when needed for patients other than their own
    • Participate in providing spiritual care to staff through (but not limited to):
    • *one-on-one interaction and support, intentional and mature listening presence
    • *providing prayer, devotions, Memorial meditations, etc. in all staff gatherings/meetings
  • Maintain Ecclesiastical endorsement/ordination and Board Certification requirements
